PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

Prayer Shawls

The concept of Prayer Shawls, an ancient tradition of our Jewish brethren (cf. Numbers 16:37-39), has in recent times taken on a new meaning and purpose for Christians. Crafted gifts of love and prayer, shawls are made to be given as tangible signs of God's love and presence to persons in the midst of life transitions. The Shawls are crafted gifts of love, gifts of prayer, from the first stitch to the last. They can be crocheted or knitted, they can be worked at home or with the group that meets here at church on the 1 st Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m.

Scripture tells us that God is always present among us — in good times as well as in bad. Yet, when we’re feeling low, perhaps hurting physically or emotionally, a tangible reminder of His great love can make a difference. At First Lutheran, Prayer Shawls can and have made such a difference in the lives of more than 80 people.

But help is needed. If you are able to knit or crochet, please consider being a part of this very special ministry. Patterns and materials will be supplied, all that is necessary is willing hands to work the materials — and a desire to spread the message of the warmth of God’s love.

Facing difficult times? Ill? Grieving? These are only some of the instances where people’s lives have been touched by the gift of a Prayer Shawl. If you, or someone you know, could use one of these tangible reminders of God’s love, please contact the church office at 410-465-2977.
