First Lutheran

Outreach

Outreach is a result of being welcomed into the community of faith and growing in our response to Christ's love for us. We have been blessed to be a blessing. At First we are intentional about reaching out beyond our walls to our community and the world. Some of our regular, ongoing work includes:
Angel Tree – Christmas gifts for children in need in the community

Pangani Lutheran Children's Center, Nairobi, Kenya – an ELCA affiliated mission for abanonded or orphaned girls

Wounded Veterans at Walter Reed – providing personal care bags for recovering heroes

Bikes for the World –unwanted bikes collected and shipped abroad to provide basic transportation

Partners in Care – a program of the Chaplains of the Maryland National Guard connecting congregations with needs of service men and women

Warm Up America – yarn donated for baby blankets distributed through Howard County Health Department, WIC program

First Lutheran Preschool Scholarship Fund -- the congregation supports families in need by providing partial scholarships to help eligible parents afford a quality educational program through First Lutheran Preschool.

In addition, the congregation responds generously to global crisis as they occur through Lutheran Disaster Relief.

Christmas Baskets Campaign

This is our largest undertaking and generates the majority of our funding. In 2011 the congregation delivered 150 baskets to needy families in the community. The baskets provide a family with enough food to last a week.

This effort requires hundreds of volunteer hours and the coordination of many different organizations. First Lutheran has been supporting this project for over thirty years.
