First Lutheran Preschool Curriculum Our mission is to serve God by serving God’s children. Our purpose is to provide a quality early childhood educational program with a Christian emphasis. We create a safe and loving environment that fosters social, emotional, and intellectual growth. Morning Program Curriculum: We believe that children learn best through hands-on exploration and play. Therefore, we utilize a child-centered thematic approach to education. Each theme is accompanied by corresponding lessons, songs and fingerplays, stories, science experiments, and art projects. We allow children to make choices from a variety of interesting activities and outside exploration. Included in our day is a small group time for intrductions to basic language, math, social studies, and science skills. Children's faith development is honored through prayer before snack, as well as Bible stories that emphasize God's love. The children also attend chapel each Wednesday and the first Thursday of the month, which is led by one of our Pastors or staff. Our morning schedule includes: Welcome activity Circle Time--including special Music & Movement by Lisa every other week and story time every day. Learning Centers--including dramatic play area, blocks, floor puzzles and table-top puzzles, play-dough, easel painting, art projects, library, hands-on manipulatives such as magnets, magnifying glasses, shape and counting/sorting activities, cooking, and other hands-on activities that pertain to the theme. Chapel--takes place in First Lutheran Church's sanctuary, once a week on Wednesdays and the 1st Thursday of the month. Snack--fresh fruit and cereal or pretzels to eat, and water to drink. Recess--indoor space is available for large motor activities when the weather does not permit us to go outside. STEAM Afternoon Curriculum: STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The new curriculum is currently under development at First Lutheran Preschool by a team of experts in their respective fields, and will be ready for our September 2012 start date. The curriculum will be project-based where children are encouraged to form questions and do research using hands-on exploration. The curriculum will build on natural curiosity, enabling children to interact, question, connect, problem-solve, communicate, reflect, and more. The afternoon schedule includes: Welcome activity Circle Time-- Teacher led discussion to help children form questions about a topic. Project Development-- What will we need to research our topic? Project Activity-- Experimentation and learning through play--may take place outside or inside. Project Recording-- Using art, language, and technology, children record and express what they have learned through observation and experimentation. Snack--fresh fruit and cereal or pretzels to eat, and water to drink. Recess--indoor space is available for large motor activities when the weather does not permit us to go outside. |
